Coastal Sage Scrub Team

On the cold morning of November 22nd, our group was in charge of the coastal sage scrub plot. We checked on our plants to make sure they were doing well and looked for any damage. During the middle of the day, our group worked together on maintaining our section by creating donut holes with wood chips placed in the center around the plants. This helped conserve moisture and keep the soil protected. This helped us figure out what the plants might need to survive. We also pulled weeds in and around our section so the native plants would have a better chance to grow. By the end of the work period, our section looked cleaner, more organized, and better maintained thanks to our teamwork and effort.

Chaparral Team

We worked on the chaparral plot for the bi-weekly check in. We observed all of the plants in the chaparral plot such as the ‘Emerald Carpet Manzanita’, ‘Showy Penstemon’, and the ‘Popcorn Maritime Ceanothus’ and evaluated their health. Our main task this time around was to pull out any weeds surrounding the plants as well as pruning them. It was difficult to identify which were the weeds so we used the app ‘INaturalist’ to help us separate them. We were also taught how to create mulch volcanos to help the plants retain water.
