Sunflower

My name is Marlene and I'm a first year at Cal State LA. In my zine I explored the lifecycle of a Sunflower (Helianthus annuus). The seeds are planted in the spring and sprout as the weather warms, growing into tall flowers with bright yellow petals and a seed-filled center. Sunflowers attract bees, butterflies and many other insects, and they thrive in hot, sunny conditions. During the fall the plant begins to wither dropping leaves as it hits the end of its growing cycle. After pollination, the flowers center fills with seeds, and the full growth process takes about 70-100 days.
