Deerweed

My name is Karla Reyes and I’m a freshman at Cal State Long Beach. For my zine, I learned about Deerweed (Acmispon glaber) a tough native plant. Its seeds start sprouting with the winter rains, growing into a shrubby plant with thin green branches. By spring, it blooms with bright yellow flowers that later turn orange. Deerweed can survive when it’s hot and dry. Then it drops it’s leave to save water but it’s still alive. After pollination it creates little pods that release seeds ready to start the cycle when it rains again.
