Chaparral Yucca

Hi, I'm Jonathan and I'm a freshman at Los Altos High School and my zine focuses on Chaparral Yucca (Hesperoyucca whipplei). The seeds spread when the big flower stalk dries up and breaks apart, or when animals move them around. They grow best in super sunny, dry places. At first, the plant just looks like a spiky ball of leaves on the ground. After a few years, it shoots up this massive stalk that can be taller than a person, with a ton of white flowers on it. The flowers get pollinated by a special moth that only works with this plant. Then the flowers turn into dry pods full of black seeds. Once it makes seeds, the plant actually dies, but the seeds grow into new yuccas and keep the cycle going.
